Why do dogs twitch in their sleep?

Only professional answers please. I don't believe they are dreaming. I think it may be a neurological response. Can anyone elaborate for me?

Update:

Lolly don't be rude. I know that dogs dream, I just thought the twitching was from another reason. Thanks to all who answered. Now I know for sure that my baby is just dreaming. Love the answers community!

Your dog is dreaming. All dogs dream. When a dog is dreaming they shake, bark, growl, move their legs like they are running, whine, twitch, they have rapid eye movements, etc. Nothing to worry about. It's perfectly normal. Just let the dog sleep. Whether you believe it or not, your dog is dreaming. It's not a neurological response.

He's not necessarily having nightmares, most dogs twitch while they're dreaming. Sometimes I see all four of my dogs legs move, and I wonder if she's dreaming that she's running :) Totally normal though, in fact, a lot of animals do it, even humans sometimes. I think your music was just a coincidence :P

You may not believe that they are dreaming, but usually they are.

People move and twitch in their sleep too. They also dream. It could be either of the two.

If it looks harmless, do not worry about it as it is either them dreaming or their body just...being alive. If it looks epileptic then consult your vet about it.

I'm doing basic obedience right now. My trainer hasn't once handled my dog. He has shown me how to handle my dog by using his own dog but that's about it. The reasoning is that I need to learn how to do these basic corrections and what not myself. Learn more https://tr.im/H3J67

I have never considered sending my dog away for training. I guess I haven't found that much of a problem with him to even think about it.

Again, it may also have to do with the level of training you are looking for etc. No idea lol. I'm not a trainer. I think a first time dog owner needs to learn simple commands and how to handle their dog themselves as well.

Why do you think they're not dreaming. Have you looked at their eyelids and seen REM? My last dog used to bark in her sleep. It sounded as if she were barking under water.
