Can you plzzzz help me with the sound on skype?

I set up my skype account and everything works fine except the sound. When I video chat I can hear and see others just fine. They can see me just fine but there's major voice distortion coming from my end. I sound extremely high pitched and I have absolutely no idea how to fix it. Plz I am desperate....Can you help?

I'm not a computer tech so please if u suggest something, explain how to go about it. Thank you so much.

    have you an external mike if so make sure its well away from the speakers if not then reduce mike recording level
