Why is more importance placed on memorising Quran before learning Arabic, rather than learning Arabic first?

I want to learn Arabic first so I can understand it better.

    Assalamu Alaikum,

It is easier for children to memorize Quran, so they can start performing their salats which is obligatory for every Muslim. You can read Quran with the help of translation to understand Message of Allah in Arabic text of Quran. You also start learning Arabic language. It is a very long process of many years to learn Arabic language. That is the reason that first all young and old memorize enough surahs of Quran to start performing the obligatory salats. Salat is not excused for any one after reaching puberty. There are two Angeles Allah has assigned with every human. They start writing all good and bad deeds of persons when they reach puberty. So every one must want to start praying to God so Angeles start witing your good deeds of prayers along with your mistakes and minor sins you will be doing knowingly or unknowingly. In salats you always ask Allah for forgiveness of your sins, so your sins keep getting erased by Allah all your life. Your goal should be to have less sins and lot more righteous deeds recorded in your books of deeds. That will lead you to Jannah (heaven) in hereafter.

May Allah guide you all the times to the straight path of Islam.

The meaning of Quran is recitation. The first word to be revealed to muhammad sws was iqra (read/recite/proclaim), so the initial emphasis is laid on recitation. To understand the Quran is much better but the basic is to recite. To explore the Quran one needs tafsirs, accepted chronology of revealed verses, when and why they were revealed etc is a science of study and the scholars do it. Simply learning arabic and reading Quran you will not get to the deapth as the verses (meccan/medinan) are jumbled together, it happens in the midst, not a linear recitation.

Also you need to memorise chapters for prayer.ing arabic and reading Quran you will not get to the deapth as the verses (meccan/medinan) are jumbled together, it happens in the midst, not a linear recitation.

Also you need to memorise chapters for prayer.

    Asalam wr wb

    - Really it's your choice

    - Learning the Qur'an makes one familiar with pronounciation.

    - Memorizing a good portion of the Qur'an takes little time if you really trt whereas learning a new language takes years.

    - There is immediate reward in reciting Qur'an.

    - Helps a person pray taraweeh/ tahajjud or any other salah longer meaning one gains even more immediate reward.

    - Being familiar with classical Arabic text and speech helps one to learn the language itself.

    - etc.

Because you need to memorize qur'an in order to pray. So thats a priority.

After learning surah al-fatiha and a few other surah, you may learn Arabic if you wish.

A lot of non-Arabic muslims have learned Arabic to understand the Qur'an, you should too.

Most muslims believe rote is all the quran reading that needs to be done to score points to heaven.A majority of them are iliterate any way,the understanding of the book is not essential for them. They believe they have earned points and thats what counts in reading quran.
