Has New York ever been hit by a hurricane before?

Hi I was wondering if New York has been hit by a hurricane before, because if it has not Hurricane Irene will be the first.

    What? Hurricanes happen every year! Where have you been? Some years are worse than others, but we are always getting the aftermath of hurricanes in August/September.
