There are houses made of cob a few hundred years old all over Europe. Done right, it's very durable.

There are adobe houses - not cob but very similar - over a hundred years old to be found in North America. Done right, it's very durable.

There are rammed earth houses - not cob or adobe, but with the common element of raw earth as the primary building material - that are over fifty years old in North America. Done right, it's very durable.

The important thing is that it be done right. If it could be done right, I'd live in a house made of feathers.

Would I live in a mud house? Sure. If it was done right.

I live in a house that was all cob at one time. there are still some areas made of mud and straw. (It's called 'Columbage' in France, BTW).

It does need occasional maintenance but it is fine otherwise.

An alternative to Cob is Rammed Earth. This is a process in which finely sifted soil is compressed or rammed into a form much like that used to form concrete. It is sealed with a polymer and has outstanding insulating qualities.
