Do Prisoners have the right to have transplants?

This was brought up on my FB...here's a Bible Verse

1 John 1:9

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Update:

I'm sorry...M Mama..I should have stated that this was brought up in a Biblical manner. So, I guess this question should be both ethical and from the religious standpoint

Religion and the bible are irrelevant to "rights" in a secular, constitutional society.

I would say yes, they do -- though not a guarantee to get them. By putting someone in prison and not giving them the "death penalty," we as a society have already implicitly stated that their punishment does not mean forfeiture of their lives for their crimes. If, while incarcerated, they will die without a transplant that *could* be done, denying them at least the chance for the transplant would be a forfeiture of their life, something we've already decided does not apply to them. So yes, if a transplant that would save their life can be arranged and done, it should be.

    Peace.

yes prisoners should have the right to transplants. However, organ donations are not common and most are put on the waiting list. A medical council has to decide who gets an organ and who doesn't. They usually decide based upon what they think the person recieving it will do with their life. For example: if you are a child, have a family, or will seem to live life to the fullest, they will give you an organ. If you are just going to waste your life on drugs, possibly commit suicide, or ruin your life they will keep you on the waiting list (basically means you won't get an organ).

They do this, not because they don't think that the mentally ill or prisoners don't deserve organs. They just prefer to give an organ to a child over a prisoner because a child will probably do more with its life than a prisoner.

Its quite side, and the reason why more people should become donors.

Yes they do..."In 1976 the U.S. Supreme Court held that ‘deliberate indifference’ to a prison inmate’s health problems constituted cruel and unusual punishment and thus violated the Eighth Amendment to the Constitution. Since then, hundreds of subsequent cases have established that inmates have a right to medical care equal to that of the public in general."

Why not? They are human beings with value just like you and I. Being incarcerated for any period of time doesn't mean these people are worthless scum.

Sad but true. Prisoners pretty much lose all their rights.
