How to make my room feel like?

an apartment? I am a sophomore in college and I still have to live at home. I would like to make my fairly small room feel somewhat adult and like I have my own space. The furniture I have is a futon bed, a toybox, nightstand, dresser, bookshelf, fish tank, and large dog crate. Everything must stay. Any tips.

Update:

If I could afford an apartment I would, don't be a smart ***, it doesn't make you sound cool.

If you can afford it go out and buy a few new pieces of furniture. You can even look at thrift shops for vintage looking items for less. If not try making over the furniture you have now. Maybe paint them?

Change the color of your room, you would be suprised at how big of a difference can come from painting your walls a different color. I even like wallpaper. Demask wallpaper is very vintage inspired and it is also very glamorous and sophisticated. Buy new linens and drapery. Changing up your bedspread from a hot pink teen bedding to a floral pattern or silk comforter can really make a room have a more grown up feeling. Try getting some frames and put pictures of you and family and friends. Try to coordinate frames. Putting up a mirror, an elegant lamp, a nice rug, artwork can really change up a space. Go for either dark romantic jewel tones or light pastels. Over all just make your room feel like you.

Can you put a piece of wood on top of the dog crate and get one of those small plastic drawer things to put on top of that. Use the top of the dog crate as a night stand next to your futon. Then get rid of the original nightstand.

Possibly stack the bookshelf on top of the dresser, or get some shelves to mount over the dresser to free up the space the bookcase is using. The fish tank, depending on size, may also be able to go on top of the crate or dresser.

Get some of the plastic under bed storage containers and use them instead of a toy box/books shelf/etc.

make sure you keep your futon up when you arent sleeping like a couch. buy a table cloth or cool fabric to put over the toybox or dog crate in the middle of the room like a coffee table. nightstand, dresser, bookshelf, and fishtank are all adult items that would be in an apt. --- get rid of anything you deem childish. keep bright colors and show your interests.

You could move things into different areas in the room to make it seem like you have more space, add colors to the wall, picture frames and decorative pillows on the bed.

Go out and buy sophisticated-looking artwork (that you like!). Add plants, and try to stick to a color scheme. Think red, black, and white, or blue, yellow, and white, or green, white, and brown, etc, etc. Try to make things look like they match. Kohl's has a lot of awesome pillow/rug/curtain sets that make rooms seem much more grown-up.

    Good luck! :)
