If I figured out who scratched my truck can I legally do anything?

A day ago my truck had been scratched in our apartments parking lots. It is a permit only lot and there are not more then 30 cars and of those only 6 are black. I saw my truck had a small dent and a black paint transfer so I grabbed my measuring tape and some paper for notes. I got the height from the ground and so the scratch height and width. If I were able to identify which vehicle is the culprit would I be able to get them to fix it? What if they said they were not in or driving their vehicle when the dent occurred? Aside from possibly creating a panic when I was examining the cars earlier today and at night am I ok to do the searching? I had done it once before when I was given the go ahead on active duty and I assume as long as I don't touch any other cars I should be well within my legal rights. Thoughts?

Update:

paint transfers are proof....though for such a small dent I suppose it would be meaningless to go to small claims

Update 2:

love my trucks its fairly new.....gonna have to pay an extra 40 a month for a damned garage I guess

Update 3:

and I do have full coverage

Without wittiness of the accident you will waste your time unless the culprit feels guilty and admits it and offers payment. But as long as you do not touch anyone;s car measure all you want but you might end up in a fist fight or they could claim you damaged their vehicle while investigating. Just fix it or forget it and move on . Thats why you either own a car you could care less about a dent in it or carry full coverage ins.

Taking vehicles with the aid of automated vehicle washes sounds like a great concept, in spite of the undeniable fact that that's a great gamble, undeniable and straightforward. as much as now as retribution good success, how are you able to tutor what replace into on the truck and what wasn't, are you able to even tutor you have been there? maximum folk do no longer save vehicle wash receipts is what i'm announcing. in case you pass to a lawyer there's a great possibility you will lay our a fortune and finally end up with bupkis. in case you're meticulous approximately your vehicle, hand washing is the sole thank you to pass. Your scratches could be waiting to be buffed out with out portray the truck. hit upon a element keep, anticipate to spend a minimum of seventy 5 greenbacks at a great place in basic terms for a buff, swirl and wax. If it incredibly is under that don't anticipate your scratches back out it basically takes too long to do it suited.

You can do that, but your research will be fruitless. Without hard evidence such as witnesses, a contaiconfession or video proof, there won't be enough evidence to prove they did it

Paint transfer is circumstantial and not enough to prove they did it. If they claim they got a guard real recently, how do you refute that claim?

okay, you find the car you think did it... so, you have to have proof it was the car and that means eyewitness, which you don't have... let it go and fix your car...

You would have to PROVE it. And thinking you know isn't proof.
