It is a defense mechanism for escaping predators, and it won't grow back. Is it just the tip? is there any exposed flesh or bone?

It is known as degloving and can be VERY painful for a gerbil so I would recommend you get your guy to a vet. There is a good pain killer available for gerbils, known as metacam.

Well I'm thinking it's not THAT bad. If it's just the tip then I believe you should be fine. Because that happend to my friend and it wasn't really that bad.

    not a big deal.

Gerbils have a defense mechanism, so if a predator gets their tail, it will come off.

    Dont worry, it grows back.
