The hotel zone is relatively safe and there has been Nothing unusual happening in Cozumel other than a couple fatalities from the cruise ships.

My wife and I go to the Cancun area each year, and will be there again this December. We feel quit safe at our resort and on excursions into the real mexico country side. You'll hear all sorts of negative things that are going on, but unless your actually there, I would take them with a grain of salt. Not really.. the government is making sure the violence does not affect the touristic locations. Most of the violence is in the North and Center of the country.
