its said that the supernova of PTF 11kly is 21 million light years away... does this mean that the explosion actually occured 21 million years ago??

    Hell, everytime you simply look at Anything, you are looking back in time.

    light year is the measure of distance light travels in 1 year and 21 million light years means a far far distance so far that the explosion may have occured just some time before but it happened so far a place that it took 21 million light years for us to know it,it is just that.

    Yes, very good. Like it suggests, light years are the distance light travels in a year, so it takes a year to see light emitted a ly away. So it happened 21 million years ago.
