I think it depends on the time you have to devote to your parrot. The Macaw needs a lot more attention then the African Grey needs. If the Macaw doesn't get several hours of attention daily, they create their own attention by screaming very loudly. While the Grey still needs human interaction daily, they can amuse themselves by playing in their cage and talking to themselves. The Macaw goes through a lot more food (which can get expensive) and love to chew. The toys that are made for the larger Macaws are not cheap, and they destroy them so quickly, they need a new one every couple of weeks. My Grey's favorite toy is a chain that she swings around in her cage on. She does chew her toys, but they last for several months. I have owned both, and can say my African Grey is the best pet I have ever had.

Well African Grey's are one of the best talkers and they are loyal friends to their owners. They are not for everyone but they just take time to adapt. If you show your love to them they will love you in return. Also, they are highly intelligent animals so they are good with communicating. Keep in mind if you want a bird to hold and cuddle these birds show their love through communication only. They are a one owner bird and do not like strangers.
Macaws are gentle giants and in my opinion they are more affectionate than an African Grey. Hyacinths are sweethearts but they are very expensive($10,000). Blue and gold macaws are the most popular and common of the macaw family. Along with their friendly demeanor they make a good family pet, but they must be socialized as babies to ensure a sweet bird. They have the personality of a 5 year old and they are very smart.
