What setting should I use on my Body Fat Analyzer Omron HBF-306c?

I am definitely overweight, in fact BMI charts list me as obese, but I've been on a weight loss plan and have lost over 30 pounds since June, putting me more than 40 pounds down from my highest weight. The Omron device has settings for Athlete and Normal. It gives a formula based on the amount of exercise you get to determine which setting to use. Well, I have been working out a lot since June. I do 30-60 of cardio every day, the cardio I do incorporates strength training through intervals and "boot-camp" style workouts. On top of that, I walk about 3 miles every day. Based on the amount of exercise, the Omron instructions say to use the "Athlete" setting.

However, I question this since I'm obese, how can I be classified as an Athlete? Based on measurements and online calculators, I am fully expecting to get a reading of 50% body fat or more. Yet the instructions and the formula would have me enter myself as an "Athlete". I may be exercising as much as an athlete NOW, but but that has only been for the past 4 months... but there is no way to tell the Omron thing that.

Does anyone here have some familiarity with this device? Can you tell me which setting to use?

It would be great to hear from someone who has used the device on more than one person, and get an idea what they say.

Update:

For the record, I know that this device is not 100% accurate, however it is one of the highest rated electronic Body Fat analyzers around. It is used by a lot of gyms and personal trainers. I know it varies according to hydration, water retention, etc. For that matter, so does a scale... I've seen the scale go up and down over 5 pounds in a single day based on water weight. I'm not planning to use the device as the sole measure of my health. I am using it as one tool in many. Along with a regular scale, body measurements, my appearance, my blood pressure, and how I feel. Its just one more tool.

According to the majority of online reviews about the product, it is accurate within a 1-2 percentage points to calipers when you set the thing correctly, which is why I am trying to figure out how to set it.

I suppose if I don't get my answer here, I can always call the company on Monday and ask.

Update 2:

I don't think body fat % is a useless thing to know. It can help me keep track of whether I am losing fat or muscle. If I'm losing fat, great! If I start losing muscle I will adjust both my diet and my training regimen to counteract that.

I take both measurements caliper measurements seem to be somewhere in between the two readings. I also log biometrics on a daily basis for both my wife and myself. The readings vary a few percentage points from day to day so you sort of need take them at the same time each day and average them.

I think you've been scammed. The problem with attempting to measure body fat with impedance is simply that electrical conductivity or the inverse of impedance is effected by many things in addition to body fat. So you can't tell what you're measuring when using impedance. The same person will get a different reading if, for example, they are retaining water. Or the difference between the amount of lean muscle mass and bone size and density affect the reading as well which is why it has an athletic setting. And, even if they were accurate, which they are not, knowing your percent body fat is not useful information anyway.

Suppose you measured at 20%. Ask yourself what you would do different if you measured at 25% or 30% or 15%. That fact is your ideal weight will ultimately be decided by you based on how much you weigh, how you look, what other people advise you, your personal health goals or biological demands, etc. and most of all how you feel.

If you want to know your body fat percent (which shouldn't matter to you anyway), an inexpensive pair of calipers (some are free) will give you the best results you can get anywhere short of wet/dry weighing of X-ray absorption. Go here --> http://www.youtube.com/user/scooby1961#p/search/10... . You can also find 7 point caliper websites...I just don't happen to have the links but you can Google them. They're more accurate. I'm afraid what you have is a gimick with a really cool sounding name..."HBF-306c" just has to be really technical stuff, huh?

    Good luck and good health!!

I've tried many diets and couldn't make anything work. Since having my first child, I've been carrying around an extra 30 pounds. This diet just made sense and showed me that everything I was doing before was wrong and a waste of my time.

The plan was so refreshing and so simple to follow. I did everything plan said and lost 23 pounds in the first three weeks. I'm now starting the diet again to lose 7 more pounds. This plan has changed my life.

Don’t mix fats and carb supply. If you eat two of the very most calorie dense molecules while doing so, your body will have problems processing them. You can consume both, but at separate times.

Snack on high nutritional fibre, low starch carbs including normal nuts and seeds, quinoa, barley and oats to reduce those pesky hunger pangs right up until dinnertime. It also stops anyone from attacking the biscuits.
