An airman`s floatation vest was called a Mae West. Why was it called that?
Go look at a pic of Mae West. A lady who was rather well endowed in the breast department.
Take a normal shaped man, put a flotation vest on him and, Hey Presto, we have a man with a well developed chest!!
Hence the nickname.
