Most modern fantasy literature goes back to the works of Arthur Machen, one way or another.
You can find a spirit guide who is a domestic / mother figure in Machen's The White People (first published a century ago).
If you want to understand modern fantasy literature, you should begin by reading Machen. Stephen King started this way.
