The 1960 election was one when the Democrats opened their convention the public did not know for sure which candidate would be nominated. At the time we had many Favorite Son Candidates. It was not good for a state to be on the side of the losing candidate. So the state would vote for Bill Richardson of the Great State of New Mexico for President.
When it appeared that John Kennedy would be the nominee and not Lyndon Johnson, A state would change its vote from the favorite son to John Kenned, the next president of the United States.
It was widely reported at the time that John Kennedy did not want Lyndon Johnson for his VP. What he wanted to do was offer the VP to Johnson in the name of Party Unity. Then when Johnson turned it down and stay a Senator from Texas Kennedy could name the person he really wanted. Trouble was Johnson did not turn it down and once it was announced (I think Johnson leaked that he had been chosen) Kennedy could not change his mind.
This election is a perfect example of a Balanced Ticket.
Kennedy from Massachusetts
Johnson from Texas
. . . Northern states would be carried by Kennedy, Southern carried by Johnson
Kennedy a Roman Catholic
Johnson a Protestant
Nixon suspected voter fraud in both Illinois (Chicago) and Texas. When asked if he would challenge the race he said no he would not put the nation through an election dispute.

Who was the only presidential candidate in history who campaigned in all 50 states?
Source(s): The answer is Nixon, in 1960. That crazy doofus even campaigned in Alaska, which was a safe Republican state.
