How can I connect a 70s Marantz turntable to a 90s Aiwa stereo receiver?

When I connect the red/white RCA patch cords from the turntable to the receiver's AUX, I don't get any sound at all from the speakers. I'm wondering if there is another piece of equipment I need to make the setup work.

Update:

Looks like the turntable might actually be from the 80s .. it's the TT 4000 model. Details here: http://www.vinylengine.com/library/marantz/tt4000....

Yes... You need a separate phono preamp unless your receiver has inputs marked "phono". The ART is very nice sounding for $39.00. There are cheaper ones from Pyle, etc... but they won't sound as good...

It probably won't work to plug into the AUX input. Old turntables weren't pre-amped and there were specific Phono inputs that boosted the signal before it got to the amp. They started building amps without Phono inputs once CDs took hold, so unless there is actually a Phono input on the receiver, you're going to have to search for a pre-amp.

70's...YMCA, is there something extra 70's than The Village human beings? 80's...protection Dance is a stable one, lots of to p.c. between, yet i'm going to bypass with handle Me by way of A-HA (because of the video) ninety's...Nuthin' yet a "G" Thang, Dre and Snoop (it grew to become into my gangsta rap section).
