Anyone know anything about party wall surveyors in the UK?

a company has bought the flat next door to mine, and served me (leaseholder) with a party wall notice. My freeholder has appointed a surveyor and invited me to appoint the same surveyor if I wanted to. This I have done. However I wanted the surveyor - in addition to this - to give advice on the chances of opposing the development as. I asked for him to quote on doing so. He says this is beyond his remit. Is he assuming that my interests and the freeholders will be at variance? Or what?

Update:

well no if you read the question properly I dn't say the neighbour and I have the same surveyor, that would be a conflict of interest. In fact the surveyor wasn't prepared to give an opinion on something he hadn't been paid for. that simple.

a surveyor gives advice as the condition of a property and how to maintain it in the same condition when the works are done ..his interest is the building ..not whether he feels the development is right or wrong ..so you are asking for something out of his remit ..he cant take sides

Your surveyor is quite correct. Since he acts for both you and your neighbours, it would be quite improper for him to take one side against the other. Also, a surveyor is not the right person for this. You do not say what your objection is to the project next door, but it seems likely that the firm involved has all the relevant permissions in place as they appear to be doing things by the book. If this is so, then you have no legal recourse. You should contact the new owners and explain to them what your reservations are and how you believe that your life will be affected detrimentally by what they intend to do.
