Gender dilemma. I need a valid excuse not to change the words in a song I'm singing.?
I wanna sing Forget You by Cee Lo Green and since the lyrics say "with the girl I love" I wanted to keep it that way since it's the original lyrics and I'm a lesbian, though I'm not 100% out. But, I've started taking vocal lessons and the woman said "You should change the lyrics to "guy I love" because when you sing it's like your singing about your life".
So, that was quite awkward and I'm trying to find a justifiable way of keeping the lyrics the original way. I already said I prefer the original, but I couldn't think of more of a defence to say without actually outing myself.
Do you have any things I could say to get her off my back/be justifiable reason to keep the original lyrics?

You could say that the meaning of the song, and the feel and spirit of it, are gone. It's like when you're translating a book from French to English: somewhere along the way, /something/ gets lost. And it's not always exactly tangible, and it may be a BRILLIANT translation, but it's not quite up to par with the original.
