According to recent extended insurance stats for 4-wheel drive vehicle, one in every 100 vehicle with 4-wheel drive will have some type of issues.
This stems from excessive use to lack of maintenance.

The 4 x 4 system is a mechanical part of your vehicle and like anything else on your truck, it can fail. However, the most likely places for failure to occur are the transfer case, the drive shafts and universal joints, the differentials and the front hubs. If your vehicle has hubs that can be locked and unlocked it is a very wise idea to do periodic maintenance on these. Check your front differential for proper lubrication as well as the constant velocity joints on the front drive shaft. Be sure to maintain proper lubrication in the transfer case. If you operate the transfer case properly and do routine maintenance on the vehicle it should give you a great many miles of service. Good luck.
