Is it hard riding a Harley Motorcycle (or any) if you're a girl? (some info)?

As of right now I'm 17 and my whole life I've been around and involved in motorcycles and such as my dad is a true Harley rider. He owns 2 Harley's. His girlfriend and many of his friends are also Harley bikers and I go on rides all the time and i love the whole 'biker' thing. My sister and her husband jus bought their first Harley as well a few months back and they're in their early 20s.

Now my real questions are:

-Is it hard riding a harley when you're first starting out? My dad offered to let me drive it once but I completely chickened out because I didn't want to crash it sense I just started driving a car and im still inexperienced.

-If I really want to ride one when I'm more experienced, will it be harder sense I'm a girl? I'm 5'8" and weigh around 170lbs.

-And is it hard steering and balancing it?

-Also is it hard controlling the speed, and how is that done?

Thanks! (=

The hardest thing about riding a Harley, is getting up off the jiffy stand. After that, it's the easiest bike to ride. A Harley is any model, is the most forgiving bike. It's what makes then the best handling, street bikes around. Performance does not mean, just going faster.

The bad thing about a Harley is if you do start to tip over, the bike is to heavy to stop. They are not that hard to pick back up, so it's not that big a deal. At your size you should have no problem. My wife is smaller than you and she has no problems.

Take a motorcycle safety coarse, to learn how to ride. The web, is not the place for that. Or have your dad show you how to ride.

One of the most unique atributes in regards to a Harley is the fact their slow speed handling is superb. The low center of gravity and the frame designs (especially the tour models) make slow speed handling a piece of cake. For anything above slow speed? All bikes are pretty much the same in steering and balancing with only minor differences in the Cruiser class. Maybe the Vulcan handles a tad bit better then most at higher speeds.

For learning purposes I see no issue for you other then the seat width (which spreads your legs out and shortens your leg reach) and the weight when stopped. After you start rolling a Harley is a spectacular handling bike in the slow roll.

its all about the love of riding lots of girsl ride bikes which is great. The hardest part is first getting going. the bike is balanced you jst have to get used to balancing it and you, since you know they are heavy the more upright it is the less weight or pressure is on your leg. you can make a bike, higher or lower put diggerent handlebars on. there are these things called dog bones that can lower shocks so the bike sits lower you have to get the bike where you can sit on it but keep both feet on the ground. But this is stuff your dad knows all about I know that for sure so the thing is put your mind to it. and go get em girl!! have fun its a blast, I grew up before the helmet laws and fou snd out not to ride with your mouth open when a big bug hit the back of my throat and I swallowed it on reflex, never did know what I ate.my advice, keep mouth shut and ride.

My gf`s first riding was on my shovel. It is far from stock. She has a `72 Honda cb500 and claims the Harley is a safer feeling bike. You should be fine, she is a lot smaller than you and just loves riding.

As far as ninebadteeth and his anti Harley tantrums, pay no attention. His issues must run deep

H-D's are heavy but with a low center of gravity.

You should be able to ride one.

They are not excessively hard to steer and the CG makes balance easy.

Speed is no harder than any other bike, it is a twist grip and control is up to you.

I taught a GF to ride 25 years ago, in daylite I couldn't get her to speed up, at nite, I couldn't get her to slow down.

Guys who have only ever ridden a harley think they are the best thing since sliced bread. Unfortunately, those of us who have ridden other bikes expect more. A harley was my dream bike til I actually rode one, the worst bike I have ever thrown a leg over. Strictly for posers. Sure you can handle one, but for less money you could buy a modern bike that is light weight, dosn't corner like a lumber truck, and isn't all blow and no go.

Take an MSF safety course, they supply the bikes, they give courses around the country, and they are cheap and save you later on insurance. They can tailor your experience to someone who has never ridden before.

You will do fine. Give it a shot when you get more comfortable.
