Why aren't "Affordable Income Rentals" affordable?

Postponing relocation to get a "perfect match", I'm wondering why "Affordable Income Rentals" are classified as such? After a security deposit, application fee, first month's rent, last month's rent, pet deposits (N/A), moving expenses, flights to and from my Home State to my Relocation State for apt. viewing, Hotels, Meals, rental cars, utility deposits, Amenities I will NEVER use at my preferred apartments that INCREASE my rental prices, and normal move-in expenses, I'm wondering here the word "Affordable" got lost? LOL

P.S. I'm a 61 yr old, moving for health reasons, from a cold/wet climate to a warm/dry climate.

Update:

Dear Flower, Been there, done that. My choices include:

HUD subsidized apartments - I cannot apply UNTIL I live in my relocation State (hence full payments for months in my apartment),

and/or

high crime neighborhoods with complaints by tenants (on-line) reaching more miles than my move coast-to-coast.

and/or

totally trashy, cardboard-type cabinets, with 400-500 sq ft. (As a DI Yer, I cannot tolerate this terribly substandard quality.)

I'm not over-expecting, as I live in subsidized housing now, and LOVE my complex and my neighbors. That's WHY I'm still looking for the "exact match".

Perhaps someone can help me locate a rental flat or duplex in the greater LV, NV area, I could work on?

Thanks, so much for your help and comments. Keep 'em coming!

Update 2:

Dear "godged", I don't protest about my housing. On the contrary, I continue hunting until I find suitable housing for my personality and financial situation ("perfect match"). Hence, the multiple trips to the Las Vegas area.

I am VERY happy because I don't jump at the first place I see or get pressured into accepting something I will ultimately be unhappy with and wish to move. I will continue my search for another year, if necessary, to reach my goal. I ALWAYS persist and obtain my goals.

At 61 yrs old, I have lived in only 6 residences in my entire life, other than my college years. This includes 2 relocation's. Although my family is located in my present New York State, they are supportive of my relocation because they KNOW I have been a planner/researcher and openly have discussed everything with them. We are all secure that I will be very happy with my decision, once it is made.

As a Realtor, I can tell you that there is no *perfect match* - you have to take something and make it work.

How would you expect a landlord to factor in your flights, hotels, meals, rental car into your decisions? They have just as much chance of renting to a local where all the crap is not in the mix.

You may have to tolerate press board cabinets, as most "affordable" landlords are not going to step up to hardwoods. In big cities like Vegas, there are going to be problem tenants in "affordable" apartments, and hardwoods are not going to happen.

The amenities are built into the price, the landlord is not going to adjust because you claim you will not use them.

Seems you protest too much. If you do not like the offerings in Vegas, do not move there.

Edit: If you are going to be so particular about the final selection, you cannot complain about the frequent trips to try to identify the "perfect match" - which in itself makes your post pointless. Rather than spend thousands and thousands of dollars on the quest, perhaps that money would have better spent to step up a price point to find the elusive perfect place.

Affordable just means that they cost less than similar market-rate rentals. It's not their problem that you are moving from out of state. The moving expenses, house search visits, hotels, meals, rental cars, and utility deposits would need to be paid whether you are going for affordable housing or market rate, and thus have no bearing on the cost of the rental. If you think that makes the entire process unaffordable, you can look for housing closer to home.

I dont understand what you were saying in your question. Affordable means much lower than market rate apartments. Since you are eligible for senior apartments, why dont you check on that. Many apartments are restricted to people over 55 or 58. And since you are 61 you can apply for a HUD subsidized apartment to start when you are 62.

I have noticed that before. If it says "affordable", don't bend over.
