What's worse: valine or aspartic acid the 6th position in hemoglobin?
I know valine in the 6th position causes sickle cell, and that valine is nonpolar thus hydrophobic and aspartic acid is charged thus hydrophilic, but would aspartic acid cause more or less disruption to the function of the resulting hemoglobin?

Since aspartic acid has the same charge as glutamic acid, you would expect the least difference as opposed to non-polar (hemoglobin S) or positive (lysine in hemoglobin C).
