How can I get my friend treatment for depression. What help is available.?

My 41 years old friend who has always been a heavy drinker lost his younger brother last year(who he worshipped) he's also having marital problems at the moment and to top it all the stress levels in his job have gone through the roof in the last few months. I am really fearful for his health at the moment, he confided in me at the weekend that hes even begun to have suicidal thoughts. Any advice from anyone as to how I can approach this problem would be most appreciated.

He needs to go to the doctor for help. The heavy drinking will not help at all. He thinks its helping him, when its actually not, alcohol is a depressant. (My ex husband was is an alcoholic so I know all about that) Maybe this is why he is also having marital problems!

He really needs to go to the docs, maybe you could go with him as support. It does sound like everything is getting too much. I have just been diagnosed with severe depression and anxiety, for which I am going to be getting CBT help for. So the docs can help you.

    Good luck

  • His GP is the best person to see. He will know his family history, help is available in the forms of counselling and probably a course of anti-depressants to help lift his mood. Alcoholics Anonymous are would also be ideal for the drinking, but your friend would have to want to stop himself. It sounds to me like his drinking to mask his problems has spiralled so out of control, only being sectioned by his doctor would help.

He needs to go tell his Doctor how he's feeling.
