What is the title of the person who is the utmost authority on medicine in the U.S?

I'm looking for the title of the position that would be equivalent to, say, the Attorney General. I can't think of it. Thank you!

    Going by the health warning on American cigarette packets, I think it's the Surgeon General.

    Further to other answers, if it's not the Surgeon General, I'd say the 'CMO' - Chief Medical Officer, assuming they're not one and the same...
