When do you use "fue" instead of "era" and vice versa?

As in, which one would you use for the weather and something you or someone else was in the past?

Would you say:

"Yo fui un idiota"

or

"Yo era un idiota"

"Yo fui inteligente"

or

"Yo era inteligente"

Fue is used in the preterite, which is used to describe completed actions. To describe people and things in the past tense, you generally use era, which is part of the imperfect tense. Weather would also use the imperfect (i.e. hacía viento). So the answers would be:

    "Yo era un idiota"

    "Yo era inteligente"

The only time you would use fue is if you wanted to wanted to say someone was beautiful a long time ago. Like talking about an old lady who was pretty in her youth (ella fue bonita)

    cheers
