What kind of spider is this?

http://i52.tinypic.com/dnfrs5.jpg

My uncle and I were cleaning the pool filters today and he lifted the bucket out and I saw this beast on the side, and told him to drop the bucket. at first I thought it was a tarantula, but then i thought that it wasnt because it wasnt big enough or hairy enough, even though it was both of those things.

If youre good with spider identification i would really appreciate a gander at this pic, thanks for the help!

Update:

totally not a wolf spider. no union jack impression on the back, black, and about 3 inches long. it was provoked alot when capturing it, and didnt seem to want to bite as much as want to flee

I honestly don't have an idea of what a 'union jack impression ' is, but the spider in the photo you posted is in fact a male member of the licosidae family, commonly called a wolf spider.

It's the eyes that give it away. (note my avatar)

Also, as you noticed, they are not necessarily aggressive. Females carrying young may be quick to defend themselves however.
