At what age do children usually start being able to draw a face?
The very rough kind. Just a circle with two eyes (usually of different sizes) and a lop sided mouth. And the hair circles the entire head.
2 years? 3 years? As late as 4 years?
My niece is 15 years old and severely autistic. Her verbal skills are about that of an 18 month old. You kind of have to know what she is saying to know what she is saying.
But it isn't accurate to just label such a child as if ALL their skills are at one level. So I was interested in her level on other issues.
Her face drawings are really funny! Sometimes she draws 6 eyes! I call those her martian faces!
Next I am going to work on teacher her to draw ears and a nose. Then other pictures like a cat face.

They start drawing like what you're describing around 3.

My daughter is 2 1/2 and she draws what she says are faces. They don't look too face-like to me. However, they are circles with some more circles inside to represent eyes and nose and mouth.

3 is when she started. My daughter turned 5 a few weeks ago and has been drawing funny looking people with no body just a circle for the head with legs and arms sticking out (today I got her first "hand"). Best way to develop it is to hand them some crayons and some paper and afterwards ask them to tell you about their picture (that blob in the corner.....really a dog, lol)

once you give her a pencil and paper she will get to know how to work with them and than in a later stage she will learn to draw faces by looking at the people around her.

my daughter started that just after she turned 3, while my niece didn't start till she was just over 4, they all have their own time for these things.
