Question about the minimum wage?

Suppose that the minimum wage is $8 (as it is in some states). Does that mean that each worker must receive $8 in cash for each hour they work, or does that mean they have to receive $8 in total benefits. Can the employer give them some benefit worth $1 an hour and pay $7 cash?

Minimum wage is the MONEY you are paid for each hour of work, exclusive of benefits. Deductions from your paycheck include:

    Federal income taxes

    State income taxes

    City income taxes (fairly limited)

    Social Security & Medicare Taxes - 5.65%

    Disability insurance

    Medical benefits (employee portion)

The $8 would be the minimum gross hourly pay, before deductions like taxes, but not including value of benefits.
