Is it possible to make a stray AKC-worthy?

I have a 5-month old miniature schnauzer that I rescued as a stray. She has an appointed to be spayed next month due to her lack of known pedigree and no AKC-registration. She's an absolutely stunning b***h and I must say a very fine specimen of a miniature schnauzer. It's a shame that her being a stray will prevent her from being AKC-registered and ever being able to attend competitions and confirmations.

That leads to my two questions:

(1) Is it (in theory) possible for a stray to become AKC-registered and participate in AKC-sanctioned competitions and confirmations?

(2) Is it (in theory) possible for a stray to become a worthy breeding material despite lack of known pedigree? I.e. DNA testing, etc.

No, I don't plan to cancel her spaying. She will be spayed next month and nothing will change that. I'm just curious.

no, its not possible for her to have full AKC registration and participate in conformations. Not even with a "DNA test".. NO DNA test will verify that a dog is purebred, and AKC wont accept such tests.

AKC requires proper documentation of who the parents are, the birth date, etc to register a dog.

What she CAN get is an ILP/PAL thru the AKC once she is spayed. She will be eligible for non-conformation events, and I believe that would even include Jr Showmanship (since Jr Showmanship is about the youngter's ability to handle the dog, and not based on the dog's conformation itself)

Sorry but confirmation is only for those of the Catholic faith.

If you are talking about conformation then I am sorry to also inform you that only dogs with full AKC registration may participate in those classes.

You can of course get her an ILP from AKC so that she may show in performance events as a Miniature Schnauzer.

Since you plan to spay her no matter what, it really does not matter, since even if there was a way to get AKC registration on her, spayed animals are not allowed to compete in conformation events.

Being worthy of breeding has much more involved than just being AKC registrable, which she wouldn't be for conformation. It's important that a breeder knows both the genetics of the dog intended for breeding, but it's background as well. Genetic testing will only tell you about the dog in question. but if the dog' unknown pedigree is filled with dogs with defects, you can be sure your dog carries for that defect. So If say I have a CH b*tch that somehow got away and I was unable to locate her and someone else found and kept her, I'd say yes, she'd be worthy of breeding, but the person who found her would never know that

AKC worthy? Since your dog is a stray with no pedigree, no, you can not get AKC registration on her. However, with proof of spay and a few pictures, you can get a PAL/ILP on her and compete in AKC obedience, agility, tracking and rally.

Heck, AKC allow mixbreeds to compete in performance events. All you have to do to get accurate information is visit the AKC website and read for yourself http://www.akc.org/

Oh and it's "Conformation", not confirmation.

No registration papers, no breeding of any kind. But you can get a limited number LP to compete in rally, obedience, and agility in AKC shows. The main requirement is the dog HAS to be spayed or neutered to get that number - NO exceptions.

And no papers you can't register her in any sense of the word for breeding and comfirmation showing.

    1. Nope. No papers no proof that the dog is pure bred regardless of what she looks like.

    2. Nope. Only backyard breeders breed unregistered dogs- their puppies are also unregisterable.

Sorry- too bad someone else threw away such a promising bit** but it is what it is. Too bad the breeder didn't microchip her- then you could find out more.

While your dog cannot participate in conformation it can participate in AKC performance events like obedience, agility and rally. In fact even mixes can participate in many shows. My own pound dogs participate in AKC events. They all have their PAL/ILP numbers

BOTH parents of this dog must be registered with the AKC to be legible. Sorry but she needs a pedigree.

You have to get the registration papers from the breeder. Maybe if the dog has a tattoo or chip you might be able to get replacement papers but I would have to say no.

yes it's possible it states on their website. i think you send a picture to show them its purebred..and a body profile..a lot of purebred dogs don't have a kennel name if they were rescued..or sadly from back yard breeders..but remember even some back yard breeders have AKC titling to look legit, when really they are only proving its a purebred not that its healthy. It's possible. But i don't think she will be eligible for conformations..people spend thousands or dollars on a dog to show them from prestige bloodlines. And if you spay a dog they are not allowed to compete in conformation except performance sports like agility, obedience, etc.
