Career pathways in archaeology?

Im finishing my degree this year and was wondering if anyone is aware of any career pathways in archaeology beyond the obvious, i.e are there any interesting jobs that an archaeology degree could possibly get me into besides academia or fieldwork?

Its difficult to go very far in archeology with only a Bachelors degree. You may find a job with an agency that needs lab- or field-crew. In the archeology field, we typically refer to these people as "shovel-bums." They are most often hired for temporary jobs, working from project to project without much stability or security. But beyond that, you are not qualified for much with a BS/BA. Under Historic Preservation Law, the Federal Government requires principle investigators to have at least a Masters degree, and since many agencies prefer Phd applicants, they hire them over otherwise qualified Masters level applicants. There are FAR more BS/BA graduates in archeology than there are jobs, and even at the Masters level, jobs are frequently hard to come by.

Honestly, this is not meant to start an argument as I'm not accusing these women of anything.

I know it's kind of long, but I'd really like to know what owomen think/feel about this.

Does anything about this surprise women?

    (Taken from an academic forum)

"Very often rapists and child murderers were made to fight one another in the arena. Remember that in ancient Roman times, there were several hundred arenas around Europe and Northern Africa. The fights varied and so did the crowds that watched them.

When these men fought and especially when they were made to fight nude, women would flock to the arenas to see the carnage. Emasculations and castrations occured regularly. Women warriors fought men as well though usually it was a staged battle with a very forgone conclusion that the female would be victorious. This was one way to humiliate the male combatant. He would be given a wooden sword or some other useless implement and again he would be naked. She (or them if several women warriors were present) would be armed with spears, arrows, broad sword or trident and be well armored for battle. The male stood no chance and the women in the audience would cheer lustily for the women to castrate and slaughter him.

The noon time executions of political prisoners, slaves, and war prisoners also drew a large female crowd. These executions were often by "Damnatus ad bestias" meaning "condemed to the beasts". The naked male would be tied to a pole, leaving his mid-section exposed. Lions trained to eat men were often used. Rome even titled certain lions "state executioner" and the lions had names as well which the crowd would chant as the lion came out onto the sand to do his (or more often, her) thing.

Often the executions were so many that the lion would become fat and lazy from eating so many, and would not bother killing the prisoner before devouring him. He would be eaten alive. Women would watch these proceedings and begin to "frenzy" the term used to describe women openly masturbating and orgasming while watching women castrate and kill men, or watching the lions feed on a naked squirming male.

It is very interesting translating some of the latin stuff. The library has a great application that helps with this and can accurately translate the words based on it's context. The first hand accounts are eye opening and not often repeated in history books because of their raciness. I read a passage last week describing a lady of position enjoying herself at watching a hyena devour a naked male prisoners aroused genitals."
