Do people on benefits all their life get a higher state pension?
Is it really true that people who have been on unemployment benefits all their life get a higher rate of State Pension than people who have worked all their life? I keep hearing people say things like this but I can't believe it is really true. Can anyone confirm this?

No not true. They get the same rate as the rest of us. If it were true we OAPs would riot.

No, people who have never worked and therefore never paid National Insurance contributions don't actually get a state pension, they have to instead claim Pension Credit which is means tested like Income Support so there are savings and earnings limits, and a partner's income can disqualify them. But there are credited contributions for home responsibilities if they have been bringing up children or have been carers for example which count towards the state pension, unemployment NI credits don't.
It's a slightly higher amount than the state pension, but anyone who gets the state pension can also claim Pension Credit as a top-up if they fulfill the means test conditions.
What you may be thinking of is that some married women who worked and opted to pay the reduced married women's contributions in the past have found it has affected their pensions, but again they could claim Pension Credit subject to the means test.

A pension is collected from working a job. If you are unemployed your whole life milking the system then you haven't worked. There are people, however, that collect a pension and then file for unemployment. Perhaps that is what you heard.
