    1.2 - ( 0.8 + x ) = - 3.6

    1) Clear the parentheses by distributing the - sign

    1.2 - 0.8 - x = - 3.6

    2) Combine like terms

    0.4 - x = - 3.6

    3) Subtract 0.4 from both sides

    - x = - 4

    4) Multiply both sides by - 1 to clear the minus sign in front of x

    x = 4

    Edit: did it wrong at the start, i'll start again.

    + 3.6 to both sides.

    This makes 3.6 + 1.2 - 0.8 - X = 0 (multiply everything in the bracket by minus 1)

    = 4- X = 0

    X = 4

    1.2 - (0.8 + x) = -3.6

    (multiply out brackets)

    1.2 - 0.8 - x = -3.6

    (+1.2 to both sides)

    - 0.8 - x = -4.8

    (+0.8 to both sides)

    -x = -4

    x = 4
