"Going commando" means not wearing underwear. The first time it was in print was January 22, 1985 with Jim Spencer writing in the Chicago Tribune, The phrase itself has been around a lot longer than that. Some claim it was a rephrasing of the Scottish phrase "going regimental" when the only thing under a Scots kilt were his shoes. Going commando seemed to become a popular phrase during the Viet Nam war in the 60's. One of the comments from this site: http://bshistorian.wordpress.com/2007/10/03/going-... states, "I can tell you that we were using it at Croydon Hall Academy In 1966 and I know we were not the first to use this phrase because we heard it from some Ex- Royal Marine Commandos who were instructors at our School.
Did you know that due to is popularity, going commando finally made it's way into a holiday? March 9th is Go Commando Day.
