Removing chimney cap mesh for winter?

We bought our first home a year ago so we're still new to things we need. I noticed (after a squirrel died in the stack) that we don't have that mesh that goes at the tip of the cap to prevent these things. I was told you only need it for the summers months and take it off when you start using the wood stove. Any ideas?

Thanks

It is usually a city ordnance to have one. Reason being that is a spark arrestor and required to be on all chimneys {that I am aware of}. I would definitely look into getting one.

Word of advise from one Johnny Homeowner to another, have the chimney looked at by a professional, not necessarily chimney but mason, or one who recognizes things you and I don't think about. Pending on there findings you can purchase spark arrestors that will support the bricking as far down as needed for seismic. You can get one that just sits on top to one that encompasses the entire stack and fastens to your roof {usually meant for us Californians and out Rocking ways lol} Just a pre-thought before you purchase. Good Luck to you guys, Your first house should be fun not a headache so seek advice.

The cap stands up about 6' taller than the brick and gives plenty of air flow. People leave them on year round.
