Hemorrhagic Gastroenteritis in dogs?
Bit of an update since my last post, plus a question.
As some may remember my dog wasn't feeling well the past week. Diarrhea, vomiting, etc etc. I got her in to a vet yesterday and he gave her some fluids and shots to help calm her stomach. She seemed to perk up but by 6 last night she was once again not feeling good - vomited five times in the night and was out a lot to strain to get a few small bits of bloody poo out. This morning is was like a geyser went off and she shot out oatmeal consistence bloody poo.
So i called and he had me bring her in and now she's there overnight, possibly until Monday/Tuesday.
Her blood work is normal (a little dehydrated but nothing to suggest an infection or disease like parvo or pancreatitis) and she's perky (i believe his exact words where "she's very energetic and just wants to play with us".) He's got her on IV fluids and meds to calm her stomach.
He mentioned Hemorrhagic Gastroenteritis, and that's what they're treating this as. Never heard of it personally. Any one care to explain or discuss experiences? I only talked to him on the phone, and i assume i'll get all the info when i go in to pick her up in a day or two - just curious and looking for possible answers now.
Thanks for those who have posted helpful answers so far. For those telling me to "just google it" please don't waste my time for however many points you get to answer a question - i know i can google it. And i have. But impersonal websites don't offer the ability to discuss the issue, or any issues that may be related that i can ask the vet about. And i will be discussing it more in depth with the vet when i go to pick her up.
Like i said, i'm looking for "experiences" and maybe some links people trust that can explain it a bit. Again, thanks for those who where serious about answering. Part of my posting is me being a worry wart!

I am a Veterinary Professor of Large Animals especially horses . I don't usually answer questions in this category but i have also owned and treated many 100's of dogs if such a emergency dictated. It seems your Vet. is doing the right indications of treatment, treat for the worse and hope for the best outcome. In 2 or 3 days you should have some kind of answer. Has he done any abdominal x rays or even he should be doing a electrocardiogram for irregularity's or specific signs of abnormality's indications. Proper medications and IV'S usually have shown very positive results in treatment prognosis he is on the right path.
GOOD LUCK HOPE THIS ENLIGHTENS YOU SOMEWHAT

You can do some research. I work at an animal hospital see if pretty regularly. If untreated it can be very bad, but she's at the vet now, so she will probably be fine. if this is the only problem, HGE is very treatable. It's characterized by vomiting and diarrhea with blood in it. It can be as bad as pure blood leaking from the rectum, to just a little. The vet will send you home with gastroprotectants that will most likely be pills, and a prescription diet or instructions to feed a blandchicken and rice diet for the next few days. Dogs recover completely and it doesn't make them likely to get it again.

My Labrador Buddy died with a diagnoses of that, but it turned out different. He had bloody diarreha, Vometing, feeling ill, going on and off on the feel good feel bad meeter. Take her to the vet and keep her there. Also, advise to him/her about holes in the intestines, as my lab had this. Please e-mail me for more information at yelvertontana@yahoo.com so as I can give you more symptoms my lab had and may be the cause of your dogs sickness.

my dog had this. Went through a whole lot of crap as well. The only thing that cured her was putting her on a raw diet.
