Is Mexico City a safe place?
We are traveling to my Grandmother's house in Mexico City most likely in December. I've never been to Mexico so I'm not sure what it is like. We do have family over there, and my grandmother knows the area so we won't be lost. I know a good amount of Spanish but I have a very Americanized accent when I speak. I look most Hispanic out of my sister and mother, but I'm afraid the cartels might want to try to kidnap us or something because we are foreigners. My grandma's house is in the city and they have a guard (not sure where it is located) but I was just wondering if looking around the markets and landmarks is safe, and suggest some safe places to go,and the areas to stay away from?

Please note that tgs gave a quote from 1997.
Many places are safe.
You are worried about being noticed that you will look American. How can you tell which person is native and which are foreigners in a city of 20 million people?
I cannot even begin to guess what the cartels will be doing. If it was that easy, the government of Mexico would have won that battle already.
My suggestion is to go, do not do obvious American things (whatever that is), blend in and enjoy. Go out with other people enjoy and be safe.

Mexico City (Ciudad de México) is the capital of Mexico and an incredible city surrounded by great pile ranges. To see this city you can choose the most effective selection hotelbye . The city's area is definitely breathtaking. Two superb snow-covered volcanoes, Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl, tower over it with their more of 5,000 meters. Mexico City also preserves numerous reminders of their past and those are issues that attract the tourists. The beating heart of Mexico City is Zócalo - the Plaza de la Constitución (Constitution Square) - where in actuality the country's first constitution was proclaimed in 1813 and now is one of the most visited place of Mexico City because it's one of many world's largest squares. In Mexico City you can even visit: the National Palace, the Metropolitan Cathedral and the Templo Mayor.

It´s safe. I walk alone in the dark to go to bars and nightclubs there. Could be at 1:00 am in the morning an nothing happens.
I would said it´s the safest place in the country.
The only issue to consider is that it´s too crowded with too much pollution and traffic, so you need to schedule your time and activities with anticipation.
Just if you are gonna take a taxi, call by telephone it´s much better.

Mexico City is the safest large city in Mexico. It's one of the safest large cities in North America. There are areas to avoid just like anywhere. The probability of you being kidnapped in Mexico City is small. Watch your back if you go into Mexico State though.

MEXICO CITY (AP) - An elderly businessman was driving home through a ritzy Mexico City neighborhood when kidnappers cut him off, dragged him out of his car and sped away with him in a red Suburban.
Not far away, a girl rode a tricycle on the sidewalk. A bodyguard with an automatic rifle trailed her on foot.
This is the new reality of Mexico City. In a city never known for being safe, residents say they never have seen such violence. Some people say things may be looking up, but many feel that is only because the capital has hit bottom.
An average of 182 violent crimes and 2.7 homicides are reported each day in Mexico City. That compares with 215 violent crimes and 2.1 homicides a day in New York this year. But because so few crimes are reported in Mexico, the actual rate is believed to be much higher.
The kidnapped businessman was blindfolded, taken to a house and chained by the neck to a toilet, naked, for eight days. When his son paid a ransom, he was released - minus an ear. One of the kidnappers had sliced it off and sent it to his son.
Like many other crime victims, the businessman believed police officers were involved.
"There's no point," he said. "The kidnapper would talk on the phone to my son for 40 minutes at a time. He would say, `It won't do any good to trace the call, because the police won't do anything to me.' "
The businessman spoke on condition that he not be further identified.
