What causes my upstairs neighbour to affect my wireless internet and FM radio?

Every now and then my internet drops outs and the radio in the kitchen will lose reception.

I use to contribute it to her hoovering or using the washing machine but I can't hear neither operating. Usually she's just walking about up there! What can I do stop interference?

Update:

To those thinking it might be a problem with the internet provider. The internet is fed into my flat via high speed cable and distributed to my laptop via wireless.

I know it's my upstairs neighbour because she went away for 4 weeks and during the whole time she was away I had clear signal but the moment she came home the problems started up again.

My ISP have run checks on the connection and can't find an issue to do with the actual internet.

Greywolf is probably on the right track as usual.

If you plug in an ethernet cable and everything works OK then something is interfering with your wifi signal, probably because it is on a near same frequency or a harmonic of it.

You can change the wireless channel between your PC and router and this may well fix your problem.

Usually there is a choice of 11 channels. See Microsofts link below to learn how to change them.

    http://www.microsoft.com/athome/setup/wirelesstips...

You might find that you are set to a mid-range default. In that case change to a channel towards the top or bottom of the list.

11 is usually a good one to try first.

    Regards, Bob.

Some Radios do that Anyway, Get a Dolby Digital Radio.

Your Internet Dropping could be many things..

First I'd Ring your ISP(Internet Service Provider)

And Complain to them (See what they can do)

They should Walk you Through Obvious Solutions Like...

(Start menu, Right click Computer, Hit Manage, Select Device Manager)

Locate the Ethernet/Wireless (The one you use) And Uninstall it.

Then Restart the Computer and let it reinstall the Network Driver.

If they dont help confer with the Neighbour and find the Solution.

    Hope it helps :)

Typically wireless devices or those with motors cause interference, like you suspect. It might be a microwave or a cordless phone in this case.

Best bet would be to change the position of your wifi modem and radio to see it that helps.

Hoovering and washing machine would not affect it as they do not give out a signal. Next time it happens ask your neighbour what they were using, it may be a wirless baby monitor, that used to affect mine.

Something she is using or doing is creating a large electrical field disturbance...is she or one of her friends a ham radio fanatic? There is a chance, in the case of a ham radio operator, it may not be her, but someone near to you in your neighborhood...not much you can do about that.

you should get in touch with your provider as i don't know anything they do can stop your internet do you have a lot of trees near you or metal beams in your flat we have on near the kitchen and lose internet when we walk in but get it back

The most likely culprit is her cordless phone. They operate on a frequency near wifi, and if it's a cheapo phone, badly made, it can definitely interfere.

    Buy her a new phone.
