When is the best time to transplant roses in North Carolina?

I have more of a green thumb than I thought! I planted some rose bushes about 15 feet from the front of my home and there is a large area between them and the house that is sort of neglected and, because of the roses (right now they are 15 feet high and in full bloom, even though it's September!), nothing will really grow there. I had thought to prune them and then transplant them closer to the house, and then plant some smaller flowers or flowering shrubs in front. What do you think, avid gardeners?!?

The best time to move a rose to make sure it will survive is in the late fall or early spring. Have the new holes ready, water the rose well the day before, then cut the bush down by a half. Dig out as much as you can of the roots near the top, don't be concerned if you can't get the long tap roots then trim any ragged roots ends off. Place a thick six inch mulch all around the base as roses love cool roots and also the new feeder roots won't dry out. Because transplanting will have damaged the feeder roots you will now have to water, water, water as they won't be strong enough to supply any nutrients for at least a month. Even if the canes sag and the new leaves droop, just keep watering as the rose bush may not perk up for a couple of months. Don't give it any fertilizer until half way through the summer as you want new roots to grow not top growth that the frail roots can't support yet. It may also not make any new growth until next spring.

Make sure you move it to a location that gets at least 6-8 hours of sunlight each day.

Also make sure and not put tall rose too close to your home. Some may cause damage to your home during say a tornado or hurricane, cause problems if you have to make repairs on your home, cause mildew to grow on your house and sometimes look a little messy. To me climbing roses look best on the side of a home.

Considering building a raised bed where nothing will grow. Having new richer soil with less roots will help you tame that wild look. Assuming it is shade, you could grow low-growing annuals like begonias and impatiens.

Bret.. Roses are dormant from say November to March. So I would suggest do the job anytime in between, Flowering shrubs preferably in the front, Flower plants do better in their own space,

I'm not an avid gardener, but spring would be the best time to do it. And yes, roses grow like wildfire.
