How do you tell which is the "x" variable and "y" variable in word problems?

    Mainly it's a problem of notation standard

    Usually "x" is the independent variable and "y" the variable that varies in dependence to "x"

    Generally, the y variable is the one you are measuring.

    You do, unless the problem states otherwise, by stating them at the beginning of the solution. For example,

    x = the green ones

    y = blue ones
