I'm thinking of joining the Navy to become a nurse, BUT...?

my mother won't let me join because she thinks I would get hurt and possibly even killed over there. How can I convince her that I would be ok?

Update:

sorry guys, but I should make myself a little more clear. I understand that I can't enlist to be a nurse. I am going to college first then join the navy as a nurse. SORRY xD

Where is "over there"? Afghanistan? Statistically, 16-year olds die more in America (62 deaths per 100,000) than sailors do in Afghanistan (52 per 100,000).

As several people have mentioned, once you turn 18, you are free to do what you want.

Do you have a well-laid out plan of how you are going to become a Navy nurse? If you can present something to them that shows how this isn't just a whim, and that you've thought it through and at least understand what you're getting into, that at least helps calm people down.

Your mother cannot stop you from joining the military, working at McDonalds, or visiting Russia after you turn the age of 18. While she is your parent and worries about you, you can do what you would like and if that means going into the Navy as a Nurse after you have gotten your degree then you do so. It is YOUR life not hers. But saying that does she let you drive a vehicle? Fly on a plane? Go to the bank? All those things something can happen to you while you are there.

Your mother isn't exactly the sharpest tool in the shed. You're extremely unlikely to be killed even in the army, as INFANTRY. You'll almost definitely be on a ship or in a hospital. Tell your mother to use common sense.

I would like to know what made you desire to be a nurse in the military ( not that there is anything wrong with it) I would just like to know what the thinking behind the predetermined decision is, email or PM me anytime to discuss this. I am Absolutely intrigued

When you're 18 you can join on your own accord. Just make sure you know what you're getting yourself into. Recruiters aren't looking to tell you the truth so i suggest visiting a VA hospital and asking around. Make sure you ask what their government did for them.

You cannot enlist to become a nurse, you must have the degree in hand first and then you are DIRCOM to ODS.

If all else fails, just sign up anyway. Once you're 18 you can sign up by yourself.

You will NOT get your BSN in the Navy
