What did Jesus mean from Luke 23:34?
Luke 23:34 "Father, forgive them for they do not know what they are doing."
This was talking about his crucifixion. Most Christians believe that since Jesus died so that our sins could be forgiven, it was God's plan all along.
IF he was supposed to die then why would Jesus say forgive them... wouldn't he say "Yay, your work is being complete... forgiveness implies that they were doing something wrong in the eye of the Lord to have to be forgiven for.
“Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.” Luke 22:42.
This indicates that for the sake of God's will.... he is praying that he does not need to be crucified.
Christians can only answer that he is praying to forgive them of the physical pain that he is having to endure.... if Jesus was merely a normal human being... maybe I could believe that... however, him having the mission to save the world... these words coming from his mouth seem a little odd. What is the meaning of these verses?

Jesus was asking his Father, Jehovah God to forgive them because they didn't know or realize and accept the fact that he was the promised Messiah. He knew that they didn't know that they were aiding in the death of the Son of God.
Jesus was also not praying to God for him not to endure his death. He knew before coming to earth that he would have to endure death in order for his ransom sacrifice to save mankind. He was perfect, but he was still a human enduring pain and emotions. He was praying to Jehovah for endurance for his will to take place and upon his death, he did make the statement, "it is done, meaning that Jehovah's will had been accomplished and completed.
A perfect man, Adam, caused mankind to lose everlasting life and a perfect man, Jesus Christ, bought it back for us with his sacrifice.

Because, oh uncompassionate one, He knew they didn't believe He was the Messiah and therefore didn't know the gravity of their actions. He forgave them so God in Heaven would forgive them and give them a chance to repent and Love God in Jesus Christ.
Taking the cup thing was because He was fully human too and experienced extreme torture, beatings and now crucifixion on our behalf. He was going to be apart from God to totally experience the unsaved sinners lot.

Christ is God and man. He is not one or the other. He is not a 50% blend of each. He is completely God and man. Christ's entire action in his suffering and death is a prayer and forgiveness for all our sins. He took our sins upon himself. He didn't need to. Jesus was innocent and free from the burden of sin. Yet he took all our twistedness, turned it into an offering acceptable to God by putting it on his very soul and then hit it with a tsunami of love and forgiveness.
He felt the darkness that sin brings (sometimes instantly, sometimes much later, even years later) and that we all feel when we sin. He felt the abandonment of all suicides, he felt the rage, emptiness and regret of all murders, he felt the shame of all perverse sins. And then he brought those sins through his Love and his Life, taking those sins for us, into his very God-man self. Those sins crushed him as God and man. It was our sins that destroyed him. We have no idea how painful and how crushing His death was. We ourselves live and die for one person only. He died for all of us - all of our sins.
So, when he asked his Father to "forgive them for they do not know what they are doing" he said more than we can understand. (And who exactly was he referring to - for he has the ability to forgive all sins!) If you can understand these very moments of our salvation completely, you understand like unto Jesus Christ, true God, true man. Search for the love and forgiveness of perfection accepting sinful in one supreme love. As John Coltrane says: "Love Supreme"
As for Lk 22:42 - Christ was/is God-man. He was facing his death head on. It was hours away. Christ prayed as man and as God to his Father and our Father. He being God spoke to his Father and because he was/is ultimate perfection ended the humble prayer with "but yours be done." Ultimate humility shown by The Supreme Almighty. His knees buckled before his own will and he laid down his very self. If you can't understand this, you are not alone. It is a lot to wrap our minds around. Heck the Trinity is one-in-three. Take a few steps back and ponder infinite love over all the brokenness that we are and continue to be. And we can do this too ... through God's grace and love. Simply because God is good.
God bless you and keep you.

Jesus forgave freely, from his heart, and his followers were urged to imitate him in this regard. Jesus perfectly reflected his Father’s love in an important way—he was “ready to forgive.” (Psalm 86:5)

Why are you telling us what we can answer. We have a lot more to say than you know...or if you already know everything everyone can answer, why are you asking. You are in error when you say Christians can oly answer that He is praying for the forgiveness of the physical pain that He is suffering. He is praying that they be forgiven for rejecting God, because that's what they are doing. You seem to ignore that Jesus Christ is God. Putting Him to death in His physcial Incarnation is a pretty strong statement of rejection. They did not know they were rejecting God. He is praying for their forgivness for rejecting God. Whether He was supposed to die or not is not the point. He was supposed to...He came to earth to die to cover our sins. Still, the ones who killed Him in His physical Incarnation commited a horrible sin, much worse than killing a mere mortal man. They put God Incarnate to death as the ultimate act of rejection of God. The will of God had to be fulfilled, but they still had sin, and Christ prayed for their forgivness. What I find troubling is that you find fault with Christ's forgiving those who put Him to death in His physical Incarnation. He's God, what do you expect Him to do, rant and rave? He created the very people who were putting Him to death. Killing is a sin no matter what. It's just like with Judas. Christ said the temptation had to come, but woe to the one through whom it comes. Maybe God just let people be who they are, and waited to see which would love God and follow Him, and which would turn against Him and kill Him. It was predetermined who would be who. God allowed free will, just as He always does for humans. So, still it was the will of God, but woe to the ones who chose to kill God. And through Christ, also forgiveness, since they didn't realize Who they were killing. The fact that Christ, as a Man, in physical form, asked for a moment to let the cup of death pass from Him, does not mean it is not God's will. Where are you getting these ideas from. It means Christ was as fully man as He was God. No man wants to face His own death. As God, He knew He, through His physical death, would free humans from sin, so He knew it was God's will, but He was expressing a heaviness, or dread at having to go through it. Are you saying He should have been happy about having to die for our sins?

Think about it, they don't believe that Jesus is the son of God, they are "killing" Jesus, why else would they not need to be forgiven... :\
