What is the advantage of locally owned businesses?

Long story short, I'm doing a marketing project for school. They're asking what the advantages of the locally owned business I chose, is. I chose a local ice cream shop, which only has one location, has minimal advertising, and it competes with ice cream shops that are well-known such as Dairy Queen and Coldstone.

Well, for one you have a strong support from a local community.... that is if it's a small town. That's just about it though. In modern America small businesses fail left and right.
