I bought a SATA hard drive with an IDE based motherboard?

I have an emachines laptop (and its older) but it has an IDE based motherboard. i bought a sata hard drive without thinking twice and now i cant use it with this motherboard. i was wondering if 1. i could possibly buy something that wouldnt slow down the hard drive at all but would still give me full capability. or 2. if it does slow down the hard drive a little or alot (plz let me know if its alot) then what can i buy? thanks for any help from anyone :)

You cannot use a SATA drive in an IDE laptop. The best thing to do is buy an external enclosure and use it for storage. They make IDE to SATA adapters for desktop PC's but they won't fit in a laptop.

If you are wanting to replace the drive in the laptop you will need to get a drive that is the same interface. IDE, PATA, and ATA are commonly referred to as the same thing. If you are wanting better performance, search for a 7200rpm or faster drives with the biggest cache you can find or get an IDE SSD.

    Hello,

    I suggest buying a sata card, which Amazon.com sells for $10 basically @ http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=sata+card...

You will be able to use this card on your next generation of motherboard when you are capable.

You should be able to take it back to the shop for an exchange.
