Why do "doomsday cults" still appear?
Christ clearly stated that "the Kingdom of God" will NEVER come with signs(Luke 17:20,21)--yet we still see doomsday cults yelling about "signs of the end times".
Why?
Luke 17:20 And when he was demanded of the Pharisees
when the kingdom of God should come,
he answered them and said, The kingdom of God cometh
not with signs: :Neither shall they
say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold,
the kingdom of God is within you.

It seems throughout the ages, there has always been some person wearing a body sign stating "The End is Near" walking around downtown areas.
John the Baptist was the first noted in a ancient literature book, and Jesus the second.
Ironically most people would ignore this person in the town square saying such gibberish, but they pay respect to it when the person is a Reverend/Minister/Priest.

Isn't it obvious that they are a cult as you have asked? You answered your own question. Only bad things come out of such evil predictions like Harold Camping's. This is why it says in scriptures Lord Lord did we not prophesied in your name? See the scripture verse in the full context and some one asked a question earlier about this verse.
Matthew 7
21Not every one that said to me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that does the will of my Father which is in heaven. 22Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in your name? and in your name have cast out devils? and in your name done many wonderful works? 23And then will I profess to them, I never knew you: depart from me, you that work iniquity.
Bad results does not please God especially when they are lying prophecies or bad predictions! There will be no excuses because God does lay it out in his word and Harold Camp needs to repent before he does more damage to other people's lives. It is not wise to claim to be any thing that you are not because if you don't have the true gift then don't lie about it! Only God can claim the rights to the truth because it is God who speaks through an individual who gives a true prophecy.

I once came across a group of people who were predicting some of the same things about the world ending and I was a young rededicated believer at the time. I asked questions about where they came up with those idea's? Before I knew it they had dropped off a whole bunch of their literature on my door step.
I didn't request it and they assumed that I would become one of their followers. Thankfully I knew a bunch of Christians who answered my questions scripturally and said to stay away from them. I ended up having to getting rid of a lot of the stuff they gave me and I certainly didn't want any part of their cult.
