Obama wants everyone to "pay their fair share" in taxes. Are the 47% who pay no federal taxes doing that?

This is often used by Obama as a way to increase taxes or reduce deductions available for the wealthy. Most of the time, "wealthy" is $200K+, but for some of the changes such as the health care bill, people have reduced benefits or higher costs with incomes of around $75K.

Can't he just call it what it is instead of misusing "fair share"?

Don't those rich people already contribute a large percentage of our tax revenue?

If they leave or reduce income generating activities seeing less of a payoff, how does that affect us?

Would "fair" include everyone paying some tax?

Update:

http://finance.yahoo.com/news/Nearly-half-of-US-ho...

"About 47 percent will pay no federal income taxes at all for 2009. In recent years, credits for low- and middle-income families have grown so much that a family of four making as much as $50,000 will owe no federal income tax.

The result is a tax system that exempts almost half the country from paying for programs that benefit everyone, including national defense, public safety, infrastructure and education. It is a system in which the top 10 percent of earners -- households making an average of $366,400 in 2006 -- paid about 73 percent of the income taxes collected by the federal government.

The bottom 40 percent, on average, make a profit from the federal income tax, meaning they get more money in tax credits than they would otherwise owe in taxes. For those people, the government sends them a payment."

That's welfare, not taxes-for 40% of the nation! Even though we have a record number of peo

Nope. They need to pay also.

Lets make everyone pay 17%, and get rid of the graduated scale, and "capital gains", and "earned income credit.

I would pay less. The poor would pay more. The rich would pay *way more*.

    I'm in.

They may not pay Federal Taxes but they are still stuck with Social Security. SSI taxes all income below the Threshold which I believe is up to $106,000 now. Up until you make over 40,000 dollars you actually pay more in SSI than federal taxes. I know I do.

Many (not all) of that 47% should have no share. People making less then a living wage should not have to pay taxes at all. At that point, you are essentially making them choose between paying taxes, and putting food on the table.

If the wealthy of this country did not hoard so much money over the past 3 decades, we wouldnt have so a large populous who cant afford to pay taxes at all.

Capitalism singlehandedly advanced the standard of living across the globe by decades. Is everybody equal? No but most of us would be poorer had some form of capitalism never existed in america. Unfortunately the croneyism that we have is too often confused with capitalism today.

Since most of those who pay no income taxes make less than 20, 000 a year, are elderly or unemployed. Look up the statistics for yourself. Other then that they pay taxes, like sales tax etc.

Many of those who dont pay federal taxes actually think they do. They forget that they get back more money at the end of the year than they pay.

I think everyone should pay the same % no matter who they are, if you earn more you naturally will pay more. We need to do it this way and eliminate all tax deductions and loopholes. This goes for people and corporations. Simple and easy and just one form... how hard is that to understand for the liberals?

    NO

    Great question.

EVERYONE should have to pay something in order for them to have a stake in it when 0bama and the Democrats raise taxes on America.

**the 47% number you gave does not include children. It's ADULTS - and most of them should be working.

Actually only 20% pay no taxes. You're forgetting 27% are unemployed thanks to this moron and his polices, and therefore cannot pay income taxes.

If the 47% are Seniors, Children, Disabled, too poor to pay taxes, as all the reports indicate....I think that they are doing their best.............but if you have a workhouse for them, please let us know.
