Study: how do you argue with friends vs. family?

I'm studying rhetoric, and I'd like to hear your input on how you argue differently with your friends compared to your family.

When I disagree with my friends it is more about a discussion than an argument. I try to use points and back my position using sources or logic. I detail potential outcomes, etc. It becomes more of a pitch, and I try to persuade to my side.

When I argue with my family I try to do the same thing but if they don't understand or don't listen to me it gets ugly sometimes. The situation is much more likely to escalate to a disrespectful area, shouting matches and insults. Also my family and I tend to be more selfish about the desired results of the outcome. For example if we are trying to divide resources, everyone always wants a little more for themselves, and we'll argue over who deserves to get it. When it comes to my friends all of us easily forfeit the extra.
