10 AnswersPolitics10 years agoWho Marx thinks should rule...?
So, after reading Howard Zinn's The People's History of the United States for a history class, I've become much more cynical of government and have recognized the need for a truly egalitarian system. I agree with Zinn (and other communists) that equality cannot come from reform, that a revolution of "the Guards" is necessary. However, I'm curious as to how Karl Marx (or Zinn) thinks a society should be politically operated. Clearly, our current republic is corrupt; our politicians seek mainly to benefit themselves and their corporate allies. So what is Marx's alternative?
2 AnswersGovernment10 years agoLaissez faire --> fascism?
Now, for a long time I've been confused by the claim that free markets lead to fascism. I realize that laissez faire leads to more power in the hands of the wealthy. I know that such a system creates worsening conditions for the working classes, e.g. Late 19th/ Early 20th centuries in the U.S. By empowering the rich, corruption inevitably spreads through the government through corporate lobbying. My question is: what does this have to do with fascism? Isn't this more oligarchical?
1 AnswerGovernment10 years agoASUS N71Jq power cord alternative?
I have one of these: http://www.asus.com/Notebooks/Multimedia_Entertain...
I've had it for almost a year, and over the past few months, the power cord has been a bit touchy. Now, it (the power cord) has completely stopped working, even after a single, successful "caveman/Fonzie" technique of hitting it until it works.
I'd rather not buy the same cord from the same company, so are there any alternatives?
1 AnswerOther - Hardware10 years agoAlternative to highlighters?
I'm taking a couple history classes over the summer, and it looks like highlighting in the textbooks will be the best way to consolidate the material. Even the professors are telling us to do it. However, I'm trying to switch into a history major, and I'd like to keep the books relatively clean for later use after I'm done with the courses. Is there an alternative way to mark books without the permanence of ink?
I've looked at highlighter tape, but I don't think I could remove it without tearing the pages.
2 AnswersOther - Education10 years agoSwitching from aerospace to writing. Need some advice?
Well, long story short, it's the end of my freshman year of college, and I'm ready to switch out of aerospace engineering to something more creative and/or artistic. Over the course of this year, I've realized what appealed to me in engineering, and it looks like that's not the best outlet for what I want to do.
I've been told by all sorts of people - among them English teachers - that I've got a knack for writing. I have a tendency to think outside the box. I really need to make something meaningful - something that moves people emotionally and/or intellectually. As much as I respect my many engineering friends, I just don't see that direction as satisfying my needs.
Right now, I'd like to write fiction and/or scripts. I'd also like to work in the videogame industry, so I think it'd be beneficial for me to learn how to make 3-D models on computers. I'm wondering what direction I should go. If I ever want to be hired by a videogame developer, I'll need a BA or BS.
I really don't think an English degree would be wise. I know all the grammar and punctuation I'll ever need. And by nature, I'm a very analytical person, so I don't think being assigned books and questions on said books would be very productive. Right now, I'm reading Jules Verne and plan to continue reading other classics. I take mental and literal notes on how Verne implements various methods in his writing. I also plan on analyzing the Finding Nemo script, looking at the implementation and purpose of each scene.
I was thinking about maybe getting a history degree and using that historical knowledge to make accurate characters. History reveals human behavior and is a great source of inspiration for art. If all else fails, I also wouldn't mind being a history professor. Granted, it would be depriving me of many of my career goals, but it's a good backup.
I also recently started looking into sociology. I think it might be a little too statistics-based for much use, but there might be something there.
I don't think psychology is a viable option. I took a fun intro class for a GE, and I surprisingly don't see too many applications for it.
I'm simply looking for input. Can anyone help?
3 AnswersOther - Education1 decade agoTime measurement not affected by gravity?
I'm watching Star Trek, and one of the characters used hours as a unit of time. In many sci-fi series, including Trek, they use "Earth years" as another unit, which uses Earth as a standard for time. In a galactic civilization -- or really any multi-planetary civilization -- this would be relatively inefficient, basing time on a constant of a single planet. It would be more efficient to base it on something that is constant throughout the universe. Because gravity and relative velocity affect time, there aren't a ton of options here. What would be a good standard for time that could be measured anywhere in the universe, be it on a small asteroid or a massive star?

Astronomy & Space1 decade agoShould I switch from HIIT?
I've been trying the HIIT workout over the last couple weeks, but I'm not really sweating that much (even when air temperature is the same). Therefore, I don't think I'm burning as many calories. I used to use the elliptical machine and end my workout completely soaked. Should I return to the elliptical?

4 AnswersGovernment1 decade agoAdjust workout to allow legs to recover...?
So now that my foot is no longer broken, I've just started a workout that focuses on building up my legs. Mon, Wed, Fri, I lift (see first link below), and Tues, Thurs, Sat, I run/sprint (see second link). I just started this week, and I'm realizing that my legs are having a tough time recovering. I'm lifting on some days and sprinting on others.
I'm wondering if my legs are sore just from not being accustomed to lifting or if I really do need to rest them more.
My sprints are my first priority, as I'm trying to lose a little weight. However, I'd also like to bulk up my legs as much as I can. How should I adjust my workout schedule so my legs have enough time to recover?
http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/3-full-body-workou...
1st Workout:
Here is a sample of what this would look like using an upper body focus.
Squats: 2 sets of 5-8 reps
Bench Press: 3 sets of 5-8 reps
Bent Over Row: 3 sets of 5-8 reps
Shoulder Press: 3 sets of 8-10 reps
Biceps Curls: 2 sets of 10-12 reps
Weighted Dips: 2 sets of 10-12 reps
Lateral Raises: 2 sets of 10-12 reps
Then you could use this workout to focus on your lower body on alternate days.
Incline Press: 2 sets of 8-10 reps
Lateral Pulldowns: 2 sets of 8-10 reps
Squats: 4 sets of 5 reps
Deadlifts: 4 sets of 5 reps
Lunges: 2-3 sets of 8 reps
Calf Raises: 2-3 sets of 10-12 reps
Crunches: 2 sets of 10-15 reps

"For the first option, warm up at a comfortable intensity for 5 minutes. Then, give your maximum effort for 15 to 30 seconds, followed by a 2-minute recovery. You can walk during the recovery or you can just take it down to a very light jog, depending on your current level of fitness. More than likely, though, you will be going so hard that you will need to walk during the recovery. Perform between 6 and 10 of these intervals, and finish with a cooldown."
2 AnswersRunning1 decade agoUninstalling Fallout: New Vegas...?
Fallout: New Vegas has been freezing over and over on my PC today.
My computer can handle it (it runs SC2 at full settings), but for whatever reason Fallout just loves to crash over and over again on my PC. I've updated all of my Windows 7 stuff, and I made sure I wasn't on a corrupted save. The only option I can think of is to uninstall Fallout and reinstall it. If I do, will I lose my saves? I've almost beaten the game, so I need to keep my saves.

2 AnswersAstronomy & Space1 decade agoWeight-loss, muscle-maintaining workout...?
Well, now that my foot's no longer broken, I can exercise again.
While I was in crutches, I bulked up my abs, chest, and arms. I wanna get lean now and lose my last 15-20 lbs of excess adipose. I'm 18 years old, 6'3", 210 lbs. I was thinking of having a workout like this:
Mon: 1 hr chest/back, 20 min cardio
Tues: 30 min shoulders, 40 min cardio
Wed: 1 hr abs, 20 min cardio
Thurs: 30 min quads, 40 min cardio
Fri: 1 hr bi-/triceps, 20 min cardio
Sat: 30 min hamstrings, 40 min cardio
I'll be consuming 2000-2500 calories/day.
Right now my first priority is losing weight, so I was also thinking of maybe alternating between days of 100-120 min cardio and days of 60 min full-body lifting with maybe 20-30 min cardio. Really, as long as I at least maintain muscle, I'm happy. What do you guys think?
38 AnswersDiet & Fitness1 decade ago'R' key not working during Fallout New Vegas...?
I got Fallout: New Vegas yesterday for the PC (Collector's edition came out later). At first, it ran pretty smoothly. I have Fallout 3 for the 360, and it ran pretty smoothly too. But damn is this game buggy! Probably the greatest strength of this game is its atmosphere, but I can't get immersed when I don't have the ability to lower my weapon or my iron sights just randomly stop working. My 'r' key no longer works, so I can't reload or lower my weapon. This just angers the f@#$ outta me! Also, I hate how you can't change the mapping of the 'switch ammo' key (2, which doesn't work anyway). I would much rather have the 2 be mapped to a weapon, or, better yet, have the scroll on the mouse switch weapons. This game's bugs seem to almost make it unplayable. Other than the occasional Steam update, are there any patches I can get to fix this?
3 AnswersVideo & Online Games1 decade agoTired, weak muscles...?
For the last few days, during my work outs, I haven't been able to lift nearly as much weight as I normally do. My muscles aren't sore; they're just weak and maybe tired. It's not like I've been working my biceps 3 days in a row; I've been working different muscles on different days, but most of them have just seemed weak recently. What should I do to remedy this?
