Can camcorders export videos to a computer with a USB cable?

Hey guys,

I really don't know much about camcorders, but I'm a student whose primary computer is a laptop without a Firewire/1394 port. I always have to go to my AV center, upload it to a Mac, and take the video out via external hard drive. It's always a hassle. I asked the AV center people if they have any camcorders that use USB cables to export video to a computer (such as my laptop). And then, the lady told me that it is not possible to use USB ports to do that (apparently it's not fast enough?). Like I said, I don't know much about computers/camcorders but I want to fact check on that. Is this true?

If you camcorder says DV anywhere on the case, then you have a camcorder that needs to have a firewire (IEEE1394) port on the computer and a firewire cord to connect the two.   They sell cards you plug into the side of your computer in order for you to have a firewire port.

The only camcorders that use firewire are minidv camcorders. Flash drive camcorders can use either a usb cord or a card reader (this is what I use). Hard drive camcorders use USB cords. Minidvd camcorders do not use a USB cord or a Firewire connection. You just put the minidvd in your toploading dvd player/burner.

they all do , they import via usb asa a mass storage device , it isnt as fast mind you as fire wire , but usb 2.0 is not that bad either
