Buy a new tv for your self, do not pay him for it. Any time you damage something in a rental property the landlord by most state laws can only charge you for the depreciated cost of repair/ replacement and this is also effected by the products suggested life of use. Most electronics have a life span of 5-10 years this tv being from the 80's is well past that i would argue that the TV died from normal ware & tare and from its age and that you are not responsible for it breaking.

1. It could be anything. Obviously something shorted badly inside.
2. That's debatable. It is pretty old and one should expect something that age to fail. However you were using it at the time even though you probably did nothing to cause the failure. So, what's your agreement with him about the TV? If you don't have a loan agreement in place, then you don't really have any leverage.
3. I would argue the point that it failed through no fault of yours.
